Emeril Townhomes

Emeril is located in a transit adjacent single family residential community that is transitioning to denser multi-family focused development where apartments and townhomes are becoming commonplace.  We set out to create a project that would feel fresh and unique and that would add to the urban fabric of the area for years to come.   This collection of townhomes was designed to stand out in a rapidly developing area of Salt Lake City Utah.

Maximizing the economic potential on this tight sight was one of the major design challenges we faced.  We were able to provide more building square footage than the site has itself consisting of 12 townhome units on just 12,000 SF of property.   This efficient use of space leads to adding more affordable missing middle units to the neighborhood.

The atypical window layout became a defining design element on this project.  It required meticulous placement of the openings to enhance the exterior design while bringing delight and the unexpected into the interiors creating a truly enjoyable living experience.

This project highlights di’velept as a top Salt Lake City Architecture firm and illustrates our ability to maximize the use of a site, lay out efficient floor plans, and use typical building materials in unique ways to enhance our designs without breaking budgets.

About the Design

Something a Little Different

There's something inherently fun about being different, and that spirit guided us throughout this project. Our goal was to design townhomes that would not only meet the practical needs of residents but also bring a sense of joy and individuality to the community. We believe that homes should be more than just places to live—they should be expressions of personality and style.

Bringing Light and Life Inside

The staggered window design does more than just look cool; it floods the interiors with natural light, creating bright and airy living spaces. Natural light is a key element in our designs because it improves the ambiance, boosts mood, and reduces the need for artificial lighting. In these townhomes, the windows are strategically placed to capture sunlight at different times of the day, making each home feel warm and inviting.

The interplay of light and shadow inside these homes creates a dynamic and ever-changing environment. This not only enhances the visual appeal but also provides a sense of connection to the outside world. Residents can enjoy the benefits of natural light while still having the privacy and comfort of their own homes.

Design Schedule

Project Description

The project features 12 townhomes units.  Each unit is a two-story dwelling with a small bedroom/office space on the first level and kitchen, living, and bedroom spaces on the second.  The front units of each set of townhomes is a slightly larger unit that also allows for access to a large walkable rooftop deck space that really enhances the livability.

Each unit is designed to maximize the use of the relatively limited space available while providing comfortable and enjoyable living areas. Thoughtfully lay outs offer both privacy and a sense of community. Whether looking for a cozy space for oneself or a larger unit for a small family, there's a home here for everyone.  The project was successfully completed in July 2022, and it has been a fantastic addition to the neighborhood.

Balancing Creativity and Functionality

One of the challenges we faced was balancing the need for creative expression with the practical demands of residential living. We wanted these townhomes to be different, but they also had to be functional and comfortable. This required careful planning and a willingness to think outside the box.

The window placement, for example, had to be meticulously designed to ensure that it didn’t compromise the structural integrity of the buildings. We worked closely with our engineers and construction team to find innovative solutions that would allow us to achieve our design goals without sacrificing quality or safety.

Community Connection

We believe that great architecture can help build stronger communities. These townhomes were designed to foster a sense of connection among residents. Shared outdoor spaces, thoughtful landscaping, and the overall layout of the development encourage interaction and create a friendly neighborhood atmosphere.

The project also includes features that cater to modern lifestyles. Each unit has ample storage, high-quality finishes, and energy-efficient systems. These details make the homes not only beautiful but also practical and sustainable.

Every successful project is the result of teams of talented people working together in order to make the project a success.  The owners and stakeholder groups play a huge role in defining the goals and objectives of the project.   It is their vision for what they want to accomplish that really allows us to be successful in our work.  Architects and Engineers make up the design team that is responsible for planning out and documenting everything that goes into making a building.  Once the project is fully documented it is then in the hands of skilled craftsmen and trade workers who make up the construction team that physically brings the design into existence.

We would like to thank all of those who worked on this project to make our vision a reality by giving credit here with links to their websites.

Addressing the Missing Middle in Salt Lake City

We love when we get to help address housing issues through "missing middle" housing projects. The "missing middle" refers to a range of multi-family or clustered housing types that are compatible in scale with single-family homes but provide more housing options and greater density. By creating these unique townhomes, we’re contributing to a more diverse and inclusive housing market in the city.
